Tonight I welcomed Peter Atkinson MP (Hexham) to a dinner with local business people. Unsurprisingly the economy was the primary issue discussed and there were certainly some strong views about how the government are mismanaging the present crisis. Peter gave an interesting insight into the “view from Westminster” and everyone seemed to feel it was a worthwhile event.

BBC Tees
I was on BBC tees straight after work today with the Labour MP, to discuss MP’s expenses. The Labour MP for this area claims the highest level of expenses in the North of England and was recently found guilty of abusing public funds by a House of Commons committee. I was amazed therefore that until earlier today Labour were going to vote to block the release of the details of MPs expenses claims. Thankfully Gordon Brown has backed down and I look forward to seeing what it made available in due course.

The Economy
I have a letter in the Northern Echo today, although you have to cycle down the page a little in the online version:

Campaigning in Stockton
Yesterday I was out in Stockton with the latest Conservative leaflet about debt. Every child born today will inherit £17,000 of debt thanks to Gordon Brown. The “Mum’s eyes. Dad’s nose. Gordon Brown’s Debt” message is one that resonated with everyone I met. This government seem determined to throw good money after bad and it seems there are no lengths to which they will not to go try to win the next election. Interestingly the Labour MP has put out some glossy leaflets about the economy as well, its just that her are paid for by the taxpayer. When families are hard pressed and we face a painful recession it amazes me that Stockton Labour think taxpayer’s money should be spent in this way. It seems the MP has learned nothing after being fined £500 late last year for the abuse of Parliamentary allowances.

Conservative Meeting
Last night I attended the monthly meeting of my local team here in Stockton South. They have worked extremely hard over the last year, every one a volunteer. Throughout the year I am contacted by hundreds of constituents, some want to ask questions about my politics and others need help with an issue that is causing them problems. Without the team I would not be able to do half as much on behalf of residents and I am extremely grateful to them for their support.
